Ellen Gregson 1828

Whilst not a Scarlet Letter sampler yet (hint hint Marsha) I wanted to share a new antique I have just acquired at auction - Ellen Gregson 1828.

There is so much that appeals from the verse to

this charming little scene. The figures on close inspection look to be squirrels dressed in human clothing - very Beatrix Potter.

I am so tempted to remove it from the frame to see the original colours but am too nervous in case I cause any damage.

Father Christmas has come early - thank you Ray.

Ray is a keeper! What a gorgeous sampler! I love the border, love the squirrel figures. So unique in every way! And the frame is gorgeous too!

Thank you for the excellent close-up photos.

What I find so intriguing are the different stitches used within the motifs.

Is the frame yew wood?

I would love to stitch this one!
Maybe if enough people feel the same way. You have good taste in needle work!

Another outstanding sampler - worth - the stag alone is remarkable. And I love the border with its possibly Quaker-influenced motifs. I'm sure it will have an honoured spot in your home :)

I just have to make a further comment about this sampler. Look at the flower head in the top right hand corner with the blue underside. It almost looks 3-D. There is even a slight look of "3-D eeness"(!) about the butterfly wings.

This could be down to excellent photography!

This sampler has just so much going for it that I am going to add my pleas to Marsha (providing Nicola agrees) to reproduce this one as well.

Look what happens when you miss a day on the Blog..... Something wonderful and exciting happens. Wow what a wonderful Father Christmas you have Nicola..... I know when my husband purchase both of my antiques, how amazed my friends were. Me, not so much, as I know my husband and he is just that way. What a lovely sampler Miss Gregson is and I am sure Marsha will be happy to reproduce it. This one will be quite interesting with all the different stitches. Congratulation and Merry Christmas. Big Hugs to Ray.

Good selection Ray--you have excellent taste.

Yes, I think this more than qualifies for a Scarlet Letter sampler

This is so pretty! I do hope Marsha can find the time to chart another one,
but I am not sure how I will ever stitch all the SL sampers I want to do! regardless if this one gets
charted you can bet I'll give it a whirl : )
congratulations on your pre-Christmas gift! : )
