My start

I wanted to at least start my Dorothy Walpole today; but after working all day this is all I could get done tonight. AND, I have a dilemma......I am using 36ct linen and from what I understand it is better to use 1 strand on this count....however there are over one sections in this chart. Should I use 2 strands for the over 2 and 1 strand for the over 1 sections, or 1 strand for all?  In the picture is 2 strands.....do you think it looks too "fat"?

I welcome any suggestions or advise on how many strands to use. I know it is up to me, but I want it to look nice. I am leaning towards 1 strand for all.  Thank You

I think one stand is fine on 36ct. I am currently using one strand on 25 ct. It took a bit of getting used to, but it is fine.

I think that it is all a personal preference Nikki. I usually use two strands on 36 count because I like that it covers the linen completely. Others like one strand over two. I'm currently using one strand on 36 for a project and I wish that I had used two. So I think it's what you think looks best to you as you are the one that will look at it every day.

Wonderful sampler choice. I have it on my list to do as well. Don't know when I'll get to it though.

Agreeing here with Deb

On 36ct I use sometimes 1 strand and sometimes 2 strands. Both look good. Sometimes I prefer the finer look of 1 strand, sometimes the fatter look.
Personally I find the coverage of 1 strand just fine as well. But we do stitch all a bit different.

If you feel unsure, you can always put some stitches with 1 thread in the border just to compare, and rip it afterwards. Whatever you choose it will look gorgeous :)

I like 2 strands on 35/36 linen, it covers better.

I personally would use 1 strand of silk on the linen you are using. I am using the same Edinburgh linen on both Blue Ribbon and SDW and the coverage is good.

However, if you are using DMC I might be tempted to use 2.

If you're using DMC then I would most definitely go for two strands or it's going to look "scratchy". Even with silk, I use two at all times as I don't like a sparse look. It's true though that it's all down to personal preference and what you enjoy working with.

As mentioned above, if using DMC 2 strands which gives better coverage. If using silk, one strand will do it, but you could still use 2 strands, but it could be a bit thick - practice a few stitches in the corner both ways and see what you think - that is what I do!

As you've seen, I'm half way through Dorothy for now. I used 1 thread (silk), but now, working on bargello part I see, that I should have used two from the beginning. I even thought about the restart.
My vote is for two strands

The kit is supplied with 40 count linen and one strand of DMC or AVAS is recommended. On 36 count I'd probably prefer two strands of DMC. If you're using one strand of DMC you might consider using two strands in the flamestitch section.
